EUROPE 2022 - RHINE RIVER CRUISE

MAINZ

Mainz used to be a rather impoverished city until the development of the Pfizer vaccine.  The two Turkish doctors who developed the vaccine own the company called BioNTech and they reside in Mainz.  Because of the taxes they have to pay, Mainz is now the envy of many other German cities.  Mainz is also famous for the Gutenberg Museum, which we visited and had a demonstration of the printing press.

The Gutenberg Museum.

Mainz Cathedral

Mainz Cathedral is surrounded by the Market Square where only pedestrians are allowed and delivery vehicles during certain hours.

STRASBOURG

Strasbourg sits on the Rhine banks of both Germany and France.  We docked at the German side and took a tour of the French side.  It is a pretty little city which has changed hands many times in the past between Germany and France.

Notre Dame Cathredal

The organ in the cathedral

Beautiful stained glass windows.

This pulpit in the cathedral was built for a beloved preacher who is buried under it.

Each tier of this clock tells a story at different times with moving figures when it chimes.

St. Thomas Church is the main Lutheran church in the city and is located on Martin Luther St.

Two pictures of the beautiful area of Le Petit France in Strasbourg.

This statue represents a mother and her two sons, both of whom died in the war.  They are shown naked and dying in her arms as her sons, not as soldiers.  One represents Germany and the other France.
